|Reference means a relationship between two things. There are many different types of reference books available for you to use. These books are very helpful when you need to write a technical paper or when you want to make sure that your information is presented perfectly. Reference books are also helpful when you want very detailed information about one specific thing such as rare coins or presidents of the United States.
Specific Reference Books
Specific reference books are good for anyone who wants to find out about one category of items, people, events or ideas. Common reference books include those that list items of one specific variety of things in chronological order. Most of the time these reference books must be purchased or used in the library and can’t be checked out by patrons.
Specific reference books are a good resource to have when you want to write a report or learn more about one subject. Nearly every war or information relating to our presidents or various valuable collectables can easily be studied through a reference book.
Dictionaries and Other Reference Books
Dictionaries and thesauruses are used to help with writing and spelling. Dictionaries do require some basic knowledge of spelling and alphabetization since the words are listed in alphabetical order. The dictionary gives the specific meanings of a word and how the words are used in sentences.
A thesaurus is used to find words that are antonyms or synonyms of the original word. For example, if you do not want to use the word jump in a sentence you can look in the thesaurus for an alternative. The thesaurus helps to keep writing fresh since you will not have to use the same word repeatedly in your sentences.
A reference can also mean that you have someone who can attest to your accomplishments and good work. Many different types of careers and colleges require that you have several reference letters from former employees, professors or other non-relative to be hired or admitted.
If you need a reference letter then you may want to contact someone you have worked with closely in the past. A former boss or professor is a good choice for a professional reference while a friend may be able to write a letter of reference for a less formal occasion.
A reference can also mean that one thing reflects another. For example, many pieces of art are influenced by another masterpiece or artist in the industry. References are also common in the linguistic world when two people share the same type of speaking patterns and language.
References are common in most languages making it more difficult to learn a spoken dialect than an academic language.
